THE THIRTIES . . .

The year is 1931. The nation and most of the world are still
feeling the effects of the stock market crash of 1929. Unemployment is at a record high of 25 percent of the labor force of the country. Despite President Hoover's attempt to pump millions of dollars into the economy
the nation sinks into a deep Depression. Whether or not the assessment is fair, the President is bitterly blamed for the state of the economy.

The people do not forgive President Hoover for the way he tries to solve the nation's desperate economic situation. In 1932 Franklin Roosevelt is elected President of the United States by a landslide.

The new President uses a shrewd combination of practical politics and an instinct for the comon touch to give inspiration and new faith to the millions of Americans who have no jobs and little money to buy food. In his inaugural address he declares "...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself..." Roosevelt's bold leadership and his efforts to stimulate the economy by providing aid to the bottom of the economic ladder seem to work. The nation begins the long climb to economic recovery.
